Our History

The Sri Ratanajoti Foundation was established in 1993 under the direction of Venerable Attangane Sasanarathana Maha Thera. Meant to expand the community services provided by the Sripathi Buddhist Temple, it has since become a powerful force for the betterment of the community and the nation, with a special focus on children in need. It is built upon hundreds of like-minded volunteers who pour their time, knowledge, and resources into making a better future for all.

Sri Ratanajoti Community Development and Social Foundation was grown from a small village Buddhist temple in Diyakalamulla, Kuliyapitiya, 90 kilometers away from Colombo.

The village temple namely “Ranatunga Mudalindaramaya” was initiated in 1926. Ven Weralugama Sri Ratanajoti was brave enough, even under primitive conditions, to sail a long voyage. The gradual growth of the temple was simultaneous with the gradual development of the village. When the temple was growing with infrastructure facilities it not only expanded its religious and spiritual services but also steered the material and social development of the village, i.e. establishing Village Development Committee, co-operative societies, local industries, and a school.

In 1958 the temple expanded to a novice monk training center. Novice monks received training in Buddhist doctrine, relevant secular subjects and social service and they carried out the above service in the temple and in other parts of the country.

A kindergarten, Sunday Dhamma school, and a library for monks were added in early 80s giving an educational emphasis to temple’s services.

After the passing of Ven Sri Ratanajoti, the pioneer of the temple and village development, in 1989 the leadership and responsibilities of temple’s spiritual, educational, social welfare programs were transferred to the hands of Ven Attangane Sasanaratana. For the efficient operation and the expansion of these programs “Sri Ratanajoti Community Development and Social Foundation” was established in 1993 and it was named after the late founding monk of the temple as a gesture of gratitude.
